Q & A
Q - Where are you?
A - We're located at 139 High Street in Lewes town centre. If you're coming by road from the Brighton direction we're on the left, just after Shelleys Hotel before the bottleneck and next door to Lewes Old Grammar School (see the map below).
Q - Can anyone apply to be a member?
A - Yes. When membership is open, complete and submit the application form, pick up one at the Club. New membership applications are processed at each committee meeting held the first Wednesday of each month.
Q - How much does it cost?
A - £30 per year renewable in June. There is a joining fee of £35 for new and lapsed members. Over 65's the fee is £15 and the joining fee is £20.
Q - So who runs the Club?
A - The Club has a main committee which is supported by various sub committees, including bar, finance, entertainment and building. The committees are made up of ordinary Club members. We encourage all members, particularly new members to join any committee where they feel they have the time and can offer help and/or experience.
Q - So where do the profits go?
A - The Club is run on a not-for-profit basis. So any excess that is made from trading is put back into the Club to improve the facilities, provide events and keeping drink prices down.
Q - Car Parking
A - Lewes Con Club does not have a car park, but the public Westgate car park is about 200 yards away. Unfortunately, it only has 27 spaces and can get full. There may be some street spaces in Rotten Row opposite the Club, or on the High Street going West from the Club. However there is a large car park at County Hall which is free at night for public use. Going West from the Club on the High Street, Its approached from a small lane next to a Church and opposite the Pelham Arms, or heading from Brighton it’s a right turn at the traffic lights into County Hall and then turning into the car park on the left (East) which is nearer the Club.
Details of Westgate Car Park are on this website http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/lewes
Q - Loading in/out
A - We are afraid its stopping on the yellow lines outside the Club entrance door.
Q - Accessibility
A - We operate the Buddy Scheme at our gigs. The Club is accessible for wheelchairs with management. It’s all on one level apart from a small threshold at the front door for which we have a portable ramp. The toilets are not Part M compliant, but one of the WC’s is reasonably accessible. Visiting outside gig times should present no problems, but please email info [AT] lewesconclub [DOT] com ahead on gig nights so we can reserve a space with a view of the stage.
Q - Children
A - All children are welcome up until 8pm. After 8pm and especially on gig nights we have a minimum age restriction of 14. Children should be accompanied by an adult at all times whilst in the building and the garden. No alcohol to under 18’s and we operate a ‘Challenge Under 25’ rule at the bar.
Q - Want to play at the Con Club or recommend a band?
A - Bands are booked by the Bar Manager with assistance from club volunteers who have a love of music. Please don't leave details behind the bar as they can get lost, nor phone as we will only consider applications via email. Please send brief details to music [AT] lewesconclub [DOT] com giving a brief bio, link to website or Facebook and if possible a video and other gig dates. Also a cost range would be helpful? As we've been hosting live music since 2008 we are on a lot of circulation lists and it does take a lot of time to go through all the enquiries, so please don't expect an immediate response.
Q - Are music nights free for members?
A - The committee is aware of members' concerns regarding ticketed gig nights where free entry for members is not advertised or a discount is not offered. A particular concern is members missing out on those that sell out very quickly.
The committee is also aware that we need to know, and therefore limit, the number of people attending a gig for Health & Safety and Fire Regulations reasons. It has therefore devised a policy which, it is hoped, will be fairer to members and allow them access to discounted tickets for premium gigs. We will introduce this on gigs in the new membership year and they will be advertised in the club.
The policy on members' access is as follows:
The Club aims to ensure that Friday night gigs will be free to members, however we reserve the right to make exceptions and to charge when necessary. These exceptions will be clearly publicised.
On other gig nights where there is an entry fee, a number of discounted tickets will be available for members only behind the bar. These will be available prior to the gig evening, or on the night subject to availability. Tickets are limited to 1 per member on production of a valid membership card.
All non-members and members’ guests must have a valid ticket on paying gig nights.
We reserve the right to limit the numbers of persons attending any gig both for the benefit of the audience, our duty of care to our staff and on grounds of Health and Safety Concerns and Fire Safety Regulations.
Subject to the above, no member will be refused entry to the bar, but this right does not entitle a member to free attendance at a ticketed event that may be taking place in the function room.
