We've recently introduced a new system to handle our weekly 'What's On' mailings. Its main benefits are that it's more informative, has pictures and is easier for us to manage.
If you click on the posters you'll see the full size versions and if you click on the event titles you'll be taken to the web site to see the full event details. And for those of you who can't view graphics in your emails there's even a link at the top of each email which you can click to view it in your browser.
We're also working hard to optimise our mailing list, correcting typos, weeding out duplicates, deleting non-existent addresses and so on. Every email contains a link to unsubscribe from our list, so if you don't want to recieve any more mailings from us, just click that link and you won't be bothered again. And if you do that but change your mind (as we hope you would), you can always re-subscribe using the simple facility on the web site's home page.
Hope you like it! |

We have introduced a ticket reservation system for events that may be over-subscribed. The first of these is Mark Chadwick of the Levellers' gig on 14th October which promises to be a sell-out. You can ask for a number of tickets to be reserved for you and they will be held on the door until 9 pm on the evening of the event. Members do not need to reserve tickets because our commitment is that members will always be admitted.

Skeptics in the Pub is a monthly event where people meet and discuss science, skepticism, rationalism and critical thinking. At each event a speaker is invited to present a topic of interest, which is followed by a discussion in a relaxed and friendly pub atmosphere. There are now about 30 towns and cities throughout the UK & Ireland hosting Skeptics in the Pub events.
The Con Club is the latest venue for this event here in Lewes - see our What's On page for full events listings.
29th June - Jon Ronson reads from his latest book 'The Psychopath Test' at the Club in June. A fantastic journey into the world of madness, as Jon displayed his credentals as a researcher/journalist, with his hilarious readings and anecdotes. There was an opportunity to buy a signed copy of the book and chat to Jon, who then answered questions from the audience.
The club proved a great venue with its stage and large seating area, complete with bar and patio - a sellout success and the perfect opportunity to discuss the issues raised in an informal setting with a drink in one hand, and plenty of Skepticism in the other!
See lewes.skepticsinthepub.org for more details. |

The new Lewes Con Club web site is under development. The web site is powered by Joomla! 1.5, an Open-Source Content Management System (CMS) released under the GNU GPL License, and runs under Apache on a Linux-based web server. Joomla! is written in PHP and utilises the mySQL relational database. The site is being developed for the Lewes Constitutional Club by volunteers during the summer of 2011. To support the Club's requirements, in addition to the CMS framework provided by Joomla!, several significant add-ons are being used to provide a subscription payment and donation mechanism, to handle newsletter mailings, to provide a discussion forum and, behind the scenes, to back up the site's database.
The web site's new features include...
- Online site management
- Membership Record handling
- Automated mailing lists
- Online payments
- Display of images, videos and other multi-media
- Google Maps with the latest Streetview feature
- Document Library with preview & download
- Supporters' Forum
- Display of forthcoming Events with
RSS news feed
- Archive of 'What's Been On'
- Latest News
- Social Networking, including automated interfaces with
facebook, Twitter and Blogger
and much more. We hope you'll like it. |

Our 2010 Beer Festival took place on Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November 2010 and was a great success.
These are the beers we tried...
Exmoor - Fox 4.2%
As subtle as the creature after which it is named, this is one of Exmoor Brewery’s most popular ales. Four malts are mixed in the mash tun and deliver a graceful and sleek malty mouthfeel. Hops are Goldings, producing a burst of delicate citrus and slight spicy on the mid-palate, and Progress, which soothes the finish with a soft bitterness, while more malt comes forth to produce a delicious and lingering bittersweet character.
Fuller’s - ESB 5.5%
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The unique blend of hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.
Ringwood - Fortyniner 4.9%
Golden ale with a satisfying balance of malt and hops.
Harveys - Georgian Dragon 4.7%
A ruby ale brewed to celebrate Dr Gideon Mantell 'The father of Palaeontology'
Fuller’s - Gales Seafarers Ale 3.6%
A fresh, bracing aroma of zesty and spicy hops is followed by a refreshing palate full of fruit and malt character.
Goff’s - Tournament 4.0%
Copper-coloured with a fine white head. Creamy caramel aromas with some musty, watery hops. Simple hop flavours on the tongue, with the occasional burst of sweetness.
Hop Back - English Hop Medley 4.0%
We have used 3 English hop varieties to create an easy drinking, chestnut coloured pale ale with a complex range of flavours. Pioneer hops give a crisp bitterness which perfectly complements the spicy citric hoppiness produced by the First Gold & East Kent Goldings hops, giving a satisfying dry finish.

Dave Moss, our Bar Manager at the Lewes Constitutional Club, was presented with the Campaign for Real Ale ‘Club of the Year’ award for Sussex at the Club on Thursday 23rd September 2010. Chris Stringer, Area Organiser for all five of Camra’s Sussex branches presented the award, stressing that it was for the quality and variety of real ales sold at the Club, all produced at local breweries. The award was for a region stretching from Shoreham to Seaford, as far north as Henfield and Haywards Heath, and including both East and West Sussex.
The Club generally offers three guest beers including Dark Star ales alongside Harveys Best, and this week was first to offer the new Harveys Old Ale. This year the Club will be obtaining a special Licence for Bonfire Night and will be open to all.
Priced @ £2.70p a pint for those under 4%, and £2.80p a pint for 4% and over, some examples of beers we featured recently are:
- Ringwood 49er 4.9%
- Hop Back Summer Lightning 5%
